"You're never too old to color!"

Some beneficial ideas for helping your child with homework:

bullet Why Do Teachers Assign Homework?

        It will help children:

                -Review and practice what they have learned

                -Get ready for the next day's class

                -Learn to use resources, such as encyclopedias

                -Explore subjects more thoroughly than time in school allows

                -Develop good habits and attitudes

                -Learn to work independently

                -Learn responsibility and time management skills

                -To encourage a love of learning

                -To bring parents and educators together in the success of the child's education

bullet   How To Help Your Child With Homework:

        You can help your child with their homework by:

                - Setting a regular time for homework or independent study each evening.

                - Create a study area with good lighting. (Create a special desk type area)

                - Eliminate any distractions, such as television, telephones, etc.

                - Provide supplies such as pencils, paper, erasers, pens, colored pencils, etc.

                - Identify and shelf resources such as dictionaries and encyclopedias near them.

                - Set a good example, be a life long learner yourself and join them in their studies.

                - Show interest in their homework.  Take them to the library for more information.

bullet How To Assist Them With Their Homework:

                    - Talk to the teacher about homework expectations and policies.

                - Be available to answer questions your child may have.

                - Check to make sure your child understands the directions.

                - Monitor television watching during homework time.

                - Provide guidance, but do not do the work for them.  We learn by our mistakes.

                - Many children are visual learners.  Observe how your child is most successful.

                - Teach your child organizational skills...buy them folders, study cards, etc.

                - Encourage them and praise good study habits.

                - Discuss the assignment with your child and let them teach you about it.

                - PRAISE YOUR CHILD!  - It will build their self-esteem.              

*  If you run into problems with homework assignments, contact the teacher to discuss possible solutions.

When homework is considered part of the daily routine, and is handled positively and honestly, parents and children can appreciate its usefulness beyond a letter grade.
