           Student Technology Use Guidelines

1.  The use of the schools computers, network, and/or internet is a privilege, not a right.  This privilege will be extended only if a parent/guardian provides permission in writing to the school.   Students eighteen (18) and over may sign their own forms.

2.  Use of the schools technology is a privilege, not a right.  The Board's Internet connection is provided for educational purposes only.  Unauthorized and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of this privilege.  Often a question arises if a site is permitted or not.  Ask yourself two simple questions.  1. Would I turn into my teacher what I am looking at on the computer screen?  2. Is the site I am browsing directly related to the work assigned by my teacher?   If the answer is no to either of the above questions, then you don't belong there.  The internet, computers and network are for educational purposes only.  They are not for recreation and/or entertainment.

3. The Board has implemented technology measures which attempt to block/filter Internet access to sites that are not appropriate for a school setting .  The Board also monitors online activity of students in an effort to ensure students are not gaining access to material that is obscene, objectionable, inappropriate and/or harmful to minors.  If it is illegal for a child to purchase or possess, an item or materials,  then it is against the schools policy for a student to visit or browse web sites related to such.   Nevertheless, we understand that determined users are able to gain access to information, communication and/or services on the Internet which the Board of Education has not authorized for educational purposes and/or which they and/or their parents/guardians may find inappropriate, offensive, objectionable, or controversial.  The school views anyone using or attempting to access a banned site, or the use of a proxy to bypass the schools filters as a very serious violation of acceptable use, and they will immediately loose computer privileges.  "Hacking" in any manner will result in a minimum of a one year loss of computer privileges.  Student's accessing the Internet through the school's computers must assume personal responsibility and liability, both civil and criminal, for unauthorized or inappropriate use of the schools technology.

4. The school has the right and responsibility to monitor, review and inspect any directories, files and/or messages residing on or sent using the Board's computers/networks.  There is no privacy when using the schools computers or networks.  A student should expect to be monitored.  Violation of acceptable use will be dealt with according to the Student Handbook.  Parents will be notified if a student violates acceptable use.  Messages relating to or in support of illegal activities will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

5.  Only the e-mail accounts assigned to students by the school is authorized for use at school.  Social Networking Sites, Chat Rooms, and IM are not authorized at school.

6.  Students are not permitted to use the Dickinson County Library computers during school hours.

7.  Students must report any inadvertent exposure to inappropriate web sites to their teacher or staff member immediately.  Failure to do so will be treated as though the browsing was intentional.

8.  Downloading, downlining, or duplicating copyrighted materials (music, videos, books, articles) is illegal.  There are some very specific exceptions that must be approved by your teacher to ensure you are not using the schools technology to engage in criminal activities.  Use of the schools resources to conduct illegal activities will not be tolerated and will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

*Teachers and building principals are responsible for determining what is unauthorized or inappropriate use.  The principal may deny, revoke or suspend access to the Network/Internet to individuals who violate the Board's Student Network and Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy and related Guidelines, and take such other disciplinary action as appropriate pursuant to the Student Code of Conduct.
